The Power of Choice

1992

“Right now you are one choice away from a new beginning – one that leads you toward becoming the fullest human being you can be.” – Oprah Winfrey

As we strive to be positive in our own lives, we may at times get discouraged by the amount of negativity in our world. One only needs to pick up a newspaper or catch a television newscast to be reminded of the many serious problems out there.

It is true that the world’s problems seem to be getting worse in some ways, but perhaps we can turn that around to put our own concerns in perspective. Indeed, many are far worse off than we are.

What really matters to most of us in our day to day lives is what is happening in our world. How are our relationships ? How is our health ? How are our finances? How are our children doing? How do we feel about our work?

While, individually, we have little control over what happens in the world out there, we certainly do have influence on our own world. We have choice, and therein lies our power. We can choose how we want to relate with others in our lives, regardless of how they are with us. We can choose, if a relationship is unhealthy and unfixable, to get out of it. We can choose to manage our money more effectively. We can choose to take better care of our health. We can choose to get help if we are worried about our children, or some aspects of our own behavior.

Sometimes we suffer setbacks in life, and feel we did not choose this. It is true, that sometimes things happen that are beyond our control, and are definitely not what we would have chosen. However we still have some control. We can choose how we will react to the situation in which we now find ourselves.

After the shock and grief of a serious loss, we know that life will never be the same. That does not mean, however, that it cannot be good. Yes, it would have been better had the loss not occurred, but we still have the choice to make it a good life. In fact, sometimes the people who seem to be living life the most fully are those who have experienced a health crisis, or a loss in their personal lives.

It is easy to become hypnotized into a belief that our life is what it is, and we are stuck with things the way they are. The way to break out of this trance is to remember that we have the wisdom and power to choose. We need only to use it.
