Living in Uncertain Times

1780

What with SARS, West Nile Virus, Mad Cow Disease, Forest Fires and Severe Weather Warnings, one could say we are living in uncertain times. It would be easy enough to feel anxious, spending a lot of time worrying about the ‘what ifs’.

The reality is that life on earth is uncertain, and always has been. Our fellow humans are constantly dealing with crisis somewhere in the world. Only when tragedy strikes close to home do we cease to be oblivious to the tenuous nature of our perceived ‘security’.

Perhaps the positive in that is our recognition we must be prepared to help one another, for we are, after all, a communal species. An illness like SARS reminds us how ‘small’ the global village has become. It also reminds us to be grateful for every day of good health we experience.

When we see families devastated as fires wipe out everything, we can wonder if the things we have been griping about are of any consequence at all. We can learn to be filled with gratitude for all that is right in our personal world, and to celebrate every day we are alive and safe.
